HAGL’s 20-year youth project faces its toughest test as youngest LPBank V-League 2026/27 squad fights relegation

Late at night in Pleiku, the training pitch of Hoang Anh Gia Lai Football Club still has a few white shirts practicing free kicks. The image of under-19 players voluntarily staying after the scheduled session has been the trademark of the Phu Nui academy for nearly two decades. But ahead of the 2026/27 LPBank V-League season, that trademark is being questioned: after twenty years of spending and patience, is it still worth it? People remember the shocker more than the contract. Bau Duc once built contracts named trust, but now even his persistence is on the scale. No longer just emotion, experts have placed HAGL among the relegation contenders. They have the youngest squad in the V-League with an average age of 22.8, and several players under 20 such as Gia Bao, Chi Dung and Chi Huong. Yet this youngest squad is rated weaker than newly promoted Dong Nai and Bac Ninh. I have followed Vietnamese football long enough to know that a 19-year-old can make the crowd stand up, but may not help the team withstand the pressure of the season. He did not chase an immediate title or buy big names for branding. He chose a long road: building an academy, inviting physical education teachers, sending mountain kids into a serious football environment. The generation of Cong Phuong, Tuan Anh, Xuan Truong, Van Toan and Van Thanh grew up, shone, and changed the perception of young players. They were not just products of one academy; they proved that a provincial club could produce national-team talents. But football never survives long on memory. Last season, HAGL survived relegation by a narrow margin. This season, confidence is thinner because analysts predict one of the two direct relegation spots will belong to them. The real issue is not one unlucky defeat, but the fading of the talent pipeline that was once a source of pride. Looking at the Vietnam U17 team in recent youth tournaments, HAGL’s influence has nearly disappeared. At the ASEAN Cup, players bearing the Phu Nui brand played minor roles and had no tactical impact. That is the blind spot of the youth development story. Most fans, when mentioning HAGL, speak of spiritual value. But I look at the squad structure and see a team losing competitiveness at the highest level. A young squad does not automatically create a future if there is no framework for those players to develop under the right competitive pressure. I have seen many young players thrown into V-League battles only to be worn down by relegation fights. Youth needs opportunity, but it also needs to be protected by results. Names like Gia Bao, Chi Dung or Chi Huong promise a future, but in football the future is ruthless: it does not come to those who wait, it comes to those brave enough to fight for every match today. I do not deny the value of persistence. On the contrary, if Vietnamese football had more owners willing to invest long-term like Bau Duc, academies would not be a story exclusive to one club. But elite football has its own rules: the patient investor holds assets, while the smart investor knows which assets to keep, which to sell, and which model to replace. The 2026/27 LPBank V-League has two direct relegation slots. HAGL cannot stand outside that line by calling itself the Phu Nui academy alone. However, before I fully believe in the scenario of HAGL being relegated, I must ask myself: where could I be wrong? If Gia Bao, Chi Dung, Chi Huong and other young players handle the pressure, they could become a new generation valuable enough to revive the club. If HAGL actually go down, Vietnamese youth development will go back years. Other clubs will look and tell themselves not to copy Bau Duc. That is more dangerous than losing one V-League team. I will not rush to declare Bau Duc right or wrong before the season ends. I only offer a testable prediction: by May 2027, if HAGL finish below the red line, people will call these 20 years of youth training a lavish failure. But if they survive and have at least two young players called up to the national team, I will write a correction titled: I forgot football can wait. Because at 42, I am still learning that Vietnamese football does not need another prophet, but more people who dare to speak first and dare to admit they were wrong.
