Lowri Hurd: From Able-Bodied Table Tennis to Paralympic – The Journey to Conquer Class 9

At the ITTF World Para Elite event in Spokane, I watched an 18-year-old walk away from the table with disappointment in her eyes. She had just lost to Brazil's Danielle Rauen in the fifth set. Days earlier, she had done something I had never seen from a Para rookie: she defeated Alexa Szvitacs, the world and European champion in women's class 9. Lowri Hurd – the player I had followed all season – left me with a big question: when an able-bodied athlete moves into Para sport, do our usual analytical formulas still work? Hurd was born with Myhre syndrome, a rare progressive genetic condition affecting connective tissue. But she had played table tennis like an able-bodied athlete. Only when she went through classification in Spain did she officially enter the Para system – receiving a very positive result in class 9. Classification is the foundation; without a stable class, no long-term plan exists. Her debut season has been impressive. I counted medals in Spain, Slovenia and Thailand. But more tellingly, she faced the toughest opponents – the top Chinese player ad Rauen – and lost in five sets. Some see that as mental weakness; I see the opposite. She pushed world-class para players to their limit in her first season. Hurd herself calls Para table tennis "a completely different game", slower, but requiring much better ball placement. Her victory over Szvitacs proved her ceiling. With more exposure, statistical probability will turn the close losses into wins. As I always say: "I don't believe in miracles; I believe in probability wearing the shirt." British Para Table Tennis has moved her from Pathway to Performance Squad. Moving to Sheffield and starting university is a structural bet on her future. But there are hidden factors: Myhre syndrome is progressive, which may affect future eligibility in class 9. The federation must manage that risk. I remember the summer of 2026 when Salah crossed the line and my spreadsheets collapsed. I learned then: "Numbers don't lie, but they know how to make us lie to ourselves." The same applies here. We should not jump to conclusions about Hurd's future. She still needs to close out five-set matches. She needs to learn Para-specific tactics. She is a remarkable talent rising, but the journey is just beginning.
