European Table Tennis Enters a New Era at the 2027 European Games: Qualification System and the Road to Los Angeles 2028

With 266 days to go until the 4th European Games in Istanbul, the European Olympic Committees and the European Table Tennis Union have published the full qualification system for table tennis. The tournament will run from June 16 to 22, 2027. A total of 192 athletes, 96 men and 96 women, will compete in men's singles, women's singles and mixed team. This is the largest table tennis participation in European Games history, up from 152 athletes in Krakow 2026. The mixed team event is a debut on the programme. Sixteen teams will take part. Twelve teams qualify directly: the host nation and the top 11 National Olympic Committees in the European Mixed Team Ranking published on November 6, 2026. The remaining four places will be decided at a qualification event in Istanbul from February 9 to 12, 2027. Each team consists of three men, three women, plus one reserve per gender. The new ranking combines each association's best men's and women's singles players, positions in European team rankings, and best men's, women's and mixed doubles results at the most recent European Individual Championships. Singles draws have 64 players each. Every National Olympic Committee with a qualified mixed team receives two places per gender for its two highest-ranked players on the ETTU European Singles Ranking of April 9, 2027. A further 31 places per gender go to the best-ranked players not already qualified, with a maximum of two per National Olympic Committee. One universality place per gender will be allocated by the European Olympic Committees and the European Table Tennis Union. The mixed team gold medallists will qualify directly for the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028. The system promotes gender balance, team depth and tactical flexibility. It also rewards nations that invest in both male and female table tennis, and offers smaller nations a clear route through rankings and the qualifying event in Istanbul.
