Vietnamese Referees Face VAR Technology Challenges: Between Expectations and Reality

In modern football, refereeing decisions not only affect match outcomes but also shape the trust of millions of fans. Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology was expected to minimize errors, but the reality in Vietnam reveals a much more complex picture than what experts and fans anticipated. In March this year, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) officially introduced VAR at V-League with hopes of improving refereeing quality. However, after more than half a season, VAR-related controversies continue to occur at a significant rate. According to unofficial statistics, in 45 matches using VAR at V-League 2026, there were at least 12 controversial situations on social media platforms with total interactions exceeding 2 million. Notably, not every controversial decision stems from technical errors in the system. In many cases, the way VAR referees interpret the rules has become the focal point of discussions. An anonymous source close to VFF revealed that some VAR referees in Vietnam are still adapting to the decision-making speed that technology requires. Nguyen Van Minh, a FIFA-certified referee who has participated in numerous international training courses, shared: "VAR is not just a tool, but a decision-making system requiring seamless coordination between the main referee, VAR referee, and assistant referees. In Vietnam, we are learning to operate this system under immense crowd pressure." Beyond technical challenges, infrastructure issues also raise questions. Investigation shows that not every V-League stadium meets FIFA's technical standards for VAR. Signal delays, camera quality, and coverage angles sometimes fail to provide accurate decisions in critical situations. Another perspective highlighted by many experts is the psychological pressure from online communities. Referees not only face decisions on the field but also endure scrutiny from thousands of fans through social media. This creates a layer of pressure that top European leagues are also trying to address. Tran Dinh Dong, former international referee, commented: "VAR places referees in a difficult position. They must ensure accuracy while maintaining match pace, and simultaneously explain decisions to millions of viewers. This is a problem without a perfect solution anywhere in the world." The reality shows that implementing VAR in Vietnam needs more time to improve both technically and in terms of human resources. More importantly, a comprehensive training roadmap needs to be established, while creating an environment where referees can make decisions without excessive external pressure. Only then can VAR truly become a tool for justice on the pitch, rather than a new source of controversy. Looking back at the history of VAR implementation at major tournaments worldwide, the initial phase always comes with certain difficulties. The Premier League took nearly three seasons for VAR to operate stably, while the Bundesliga had to adjust its working procedures multiple times before achieving consensus among stakeholders. For Vietnam, lessons from major leagues show that patience is key. Evaluating VAR's effectiveness after one season is probably too early. What is necessary is to continue improving infrastructure, training personnel, and most importantly, building fan trust through transparency in the decision-making process.
